Another magic weekend was supervised by RD Baz Hawley, his last in a
while. Baz is threatening to make good on his promise to move to
Australia, a country who's population he describes as having been
handpicked by England's judges. He should, it goes without saying, fit
right in.

Rob McNair has run all 13 renditions of Shadow of the Giants, and won
again this year for the umpteenth time. Kate Gengler held off Maria
Gallardo and Laura Weaver for the women's win. All 99 finishers
enjoyed the magic of this magnificent country immediately south of
Yosemite National Park, especially the Nelder Grove where a thicket of
2500-year-old giant sequoias reside.

The post-race raffle was almost as much fun as the race. Baz had his
usual odd assortment of prizes and gifts to give away, a few of them
elegant, most of them not quite so. At the end, he called out, "so,
OK, who hasn't won anything yet?" And those few were given the
remaining prizes. Nobody went home without something, even if it was
something as simple as a black stocking cap (an "O.J hat" in Baz's
parlance).

Baz has always presented his events in a joking, low-key manner. At
times, things even seem haphazard. This is generally a ruse to keep
things fun. Behind the façade is a lot of careful planning and
attention to detail. As usual this year, the course was very well
marked, the aid plentiful and well organized, and the post-race
festivities both humorous and charming. The Aussies will gain another
true character, and their gain will be our loss. He will be missed.
